Basque separatist group ETA detonated a bomb in a van outside a municipal police station in Burgos in the early hours of this morning, says El Mundo.

Early reports claim 54 people were injured, including various policemen, two pregnant women and six children, but none are seriously wounded. Most injuries were caused by glass shattering in nearby windows.

The van was parked outside the rear of the 14 storey barracks, where the families of the policemen live. Fortunately many families are on holidays at the minute so many apartments were empty last night. The bomb created a huge crater in the ground and serious damage to the surrounding buildings. The exact amount of explosives used has not yet been established, nor the type of vehicle involved, as the remains were completely destroyed in the blast. Sources estimate that anything from 80 to 200 kilos of explosive were in the bomb.

Minister for the Interior, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba and Secretary of State Security Antonio Camacho have travelled to Burgos today to offer their support to the municipal police force, claiming ‘this was an attempt to harm their families’. ETA have upped their violent campaign in recent months, with the death of Eduardo Antonio Puelles García in June and an explosion in Durango, (Vizcaya) earlier this month. El Mundo also reports six other attacks during 2009.
